A couple of decades back I selected instructions and life events of Shirdi Sai Baba in eighteen groups each, and compiled them into a write-up for my ready reference and periodic recital programs in the pursuit of my spiritual and material goals.

The selection criterion I used was simple - those instructions and life events of Baba that will contribute to the surrender of my Consciousness to the universal Consciousness. This write-up was so much useful for me to learn, practice and perfect the technology of Surrender by differentiating and expanding my Consciousness and merging It with the universal Consciousness.

In these two decades my family, social and professional transactions have become more and more peaceful due to the influence of the content of that write-up.

I have used that write-up to prepare this book.

It is the characteristic of Baba to teach His followers through practical demonstrations of events in their life so that they would easily understand His instructions and would not forget them for their lifetime. Therefore, more than half of the verbal instructions of Baba are to be read in the context of the corresponding life events of devotees and followers of Baba. For this purpose I have given hyperlinks for the related verbal instructions (Related Words) and life events (Related Leela) so that readers can easily navigate between them.

1. Let us bow to the holy Feet of Shirdi Sai Baba residing in all living beings we see daily, who said,

“Be wherever you like, do whatever you choose, but remember this well that all what you do is known to Me.”

 

2. Let us bow to the holy Feet of Shirdi Sai Baba residing in all living beings we see daily, who said,

“It is my special characteristic that I always look to and provide for the welfare of My devotees.”

 

3. Let us bow to the holy Feet of Shirdi Sai Baba residing in all living beings we see daily, who said,

“Believe Me, though I pass away, My bones in My tomb will give you hope and confidence.”

 

4. Let us bow to the holy Feet of Shirdi Sai Baba residing in all living beings we see daily, who said,

“He who sees Me in all these creatures is My beloved.”

 

5. Let us bow to the holy Feet of Shirdi Sai Baba residing in all living beings we see daily, who said,

“See Me inside you as well as in all beings; you will realize all-pervasiveness and oneness with Me.”

 

6. Let us bow to the holy Feet of Shirdi Sai Baba residing in all living beings we see daily, who said,

“Barring your name and form, there exists in you, a sense of Consciousness - That is Myself.”

 

7. Let us bow to the holy Feet of Shirdi Sai Baba residing in all living beings we see daily, who said,

“I carry on, as a wire-puller, all the actions of the man who trusts Me and merges in Me.”

 

Surrender Prayer – How it works

 

* We’ll get divine assistance from the universal Consciousness of God in our daily life if our words, thoughts and desires of abnormal negativity in our family, social and professional transactions are controlled.

 

* If our Consciousness is discriminated from our body, mind and heart, then our words, thoughts and desires of abnormal negativity in our family, social and professional transactions will be effortlessly controlled.

 

* If our Consciousness is surrendered to the universal Consciousness, then our Consciousness will be discriminated from our body, mind and heart.

 

* If we imagine and worship, in our mind, God residing in living beings like plants, birds, animals and human beings we encounter in our daily life, then our Consciousness will be surrendered to the universal Consciousness.

 

* When we worship a spiritually very advanced Saint like Shirdi Sai Baba with the faith that the Saint is always in complete spiritual merger with all-pervading omniscient omnipotent God, the process of surrender of our consciousness to the universal Consciousness is accelerated.

Introduction to Shirdi Sai Baba

Shirdi Sai Baba

If you go to Mumbai (India), you can see, in many places, the picture of a Saint sitting like a royal king, with His right leg folded on His left and unmindful of the tear of His shirt on the right arm, on a stone. Shirdi Sai Baba is a household name now for most people in India, not only in the State of Maharashtra but almost in all States.

Nobody knows His birth details exactly. He is believed to be born in a village near Nasik in Maharashtra in central India in a Hindu family in the late first half of nineteenth century and brought up by a Muslim. The name Sai was also not the name given by His parents but by a devotee. We have records only from the time He appeared as a youth in Shirdi, a small village near Nasik. At that time He was mainly absorbed in meditation for most of the time.

Baba spent most of His time only in and around Shirdi. He never travelled far. He lived in a dilapidated mosque there. He always insisted that God represented in Islam and Hinduism was one and the same, and so often used ‘Allah’ and ‘Hari:’, the Names of God in Islam and Vaishnavam (a sect of Hinduism) interchangeably in His instructions.

Baba left His body in the early twentieth century. Thousands of devotees are visiting the temple built over His samadhi (tomb) in Shirdi daily in the present day.

Baba demonstrated practically the deep meaning of many verses of Bhagavad Gita by means of events in the life of His devotees so that His devotees would never forget it in their life. His teachings displayed a judicious blend of the principles of jnanam (wisdom), saranagati (surrender) and bhakti (devotion), and the doctrines of Advaita (non-duality), Visishta-Advaita (qualified non-duality) and dvaita (duality).

Baba never called Himself God but always demonstrated His oneness with the all-pervading omniscient and omnipotent universal Consciousness of God. That’s why He always took care of the spiritual as well as material needs of His devotees who learned to surrender their Consciousness to Him.
